Mission and Values

Consistent with Vel Phillips’ commitment to justice for minorities, the mission of the Vel Phillips Foundation is to help establish equality and opportunity for minorities through social justice, education, equal housing opportunities, and jobs.

Initiatives

Like its namesake, the Vel Phillips Foundation recognizes that progress toward a goal takes persistence, collaboration, and open communication. We can do more together, by uniting our efforts and talents, than we could ever accomplish individually. Seeking collaboration and cooperation across the community, the Foundation will support and expand on the work of the committed people who are already making a difference.

As such, an important part of the Foundation’s work will be to clarify community needs, evaluate progress of current efforts, and creatively develop new, collaborative ways to cover the gaps.

The Vel Phillips Foundation will give people of all ages and experience various avenues to contribute their time, talents, and resources to meet the needs of the community.

To achieve its mission, the Vel Phillips Foundation will engage in the following types of activities:

• Providing scholarships for minorities
• Providing funds and/or volunteers to existing programs that focus on one or more of the foundation’s core areas
• Collaborating with existing programs that assist in minority participation in the economic strength of the community
• Setting up cutting-edge foundation programs to perpetuate and promote social justice and equal opportunity across the community
• Seeking mentors and role models who embody our values and beliefs to serve as role models for youth
• Providing venues for youth to serve as volunteers in organizations that will carry on the vision.
